Friday, September 19 - Travel Day 

Walked (!) from the hotel to the airport. Checked in early because I hate worrying about being late.

Flew Lufthansa Wroclaw to Munich, about one hour, no problems.

Two hour layover in Munich, which was just barely enough because we had to move a lot to get to our departure gate. Deplaned from Wroclaw flight onto the tarmac and got on a bus. Long wait on the bus till everyone was off the plane, including an elderly lady who needed a wheelchair (and yes, they had two guys carry her in a wheelchair down the movable stairway to the tarmac.) Bus took us to the arrival terminal which wasn't our departure terminal. Needed to take a train to get there. Crowded train, didn't fit on the first one that came by so we waited and caught the next one. Eventually got to the right terminal and the right gate just as preboarding began for our flight.

The long nine hour flight home was on an Airbus A380-800. A very big jet, is a double-decker with first class and business class upstairs and economy downstairs. In economy there were two aisles and each row had 10 seats, three on each side and four in the middle section. Reasonably comfy with the three of us in a middle section with an empty seat.



Snack (pretzels and a chocolate), dinner (real silverware, free wine) then a hot breakfast (like a breakfast burrito), so I didn't get hungry.

Finally landed within 30 minutes of scheduled arrival time. Took the (crowded) mobile lounge to the terminal, waited a while in the customs line. The actual processing was pretty quick (do you have  anything to declare? any meats or vegetables?) but there were a lot of people so it took a while. Got my bags no problem, then waited for Andrew to pick me up. This took a while because there were many people parked at the curb, blocking traffic. Until a police officer came by and made them all move.

Finally got home about 10 pm EST, 4 AM Poland time.

Good to be home and sleep in my own bed.

First Day of Trip--Travel Day September 2, 2025 Tuesday into Wednesday.  -- Andrew dropped me off at Dulles airport. Good traffic into the airport, despite a small slowdown over the American Legion Bridge. He says it was OK going home too, only 5-ish minutes of slowdown from construction. --Met up with Marty and Paola at the airport.  Went through security with no problem. My carry on bag didn't fit in their size tester, so it got checked through to Wroclaw.  --Thirteen hours of travel, including 10 hours airtime, 4 hour layover in Frankfurt before getting to Wroclaw.  Poland is 6 hours ahead of Maryland.  An Airbus A340-300. so big there are two skyways to load the plane B45 and B47.   Took off from Dulles airport on Lufthansa Airlines. I was hoping to ride in the Mobile Lounges, but they only serve the old part of the airport. Poland, Day 6-7, Monday and Tuesday, September 8-9

 September 8-9, 2025 Monday, 9/8 All of the European Union has the same style of license plate. The country is differentiated on the left side. Very few American brands, like Ford or Chevy, are seen. This morning we visited the Wieliczka Salt Mines. The mines were in continuous use from the 13th century until 1996. They are over 1000' below ground and extend over 178 miles. Tourists can see about 2% of the mine.  There are 300 steps to get into the mine. Luckily, everyone's knees held up. The mines have 4 chapels with lots of religious carvings in the salt. In the afternoon, we toured Krakow's Jewish District. This district was  named Kasimierz after King Kasimir III, who, in 1335, formally declared the area, then a suburb of Krakow, a town for Jews and ethnic Poles to peacefully coexist until WWII.    Notice the white wall on the right-hand side of the picture. Tuesday Sept 16 - MiastKowo & Travel Day

Tuesday Sept 16 - MiastKowo & Travel Day MiastKowo is a small town with the parish church nearest to the village of Czartoria, the family home. We met the priest and looked at some of their old records. Got photos of pages we thought were relevant, again in Russian Cyrillic cursive, hopefully to be translated later. We couldn't read the writing but could recognize the names. Took the Priest to lunch, but he tricked us and paid for everyone on a trip to the bathroom. Visited the local cemetery. Didn't find any graves of actual family members, but found a lot with the family name. Visited Czartoria, a really small town, no church, didn't see a grocery store. Didn't really stop except to get a photo. Now on the road to Gdansk. On the way we saw several Stork nests atop telephone poles: Quite a lot bigger than I expected.
